Stork Craft Cribs Recalled

After receiving various reports of problems with the Stork Craft Baby Cribs, the cribs have been recalled. In a press release by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, it was reported that there have been at least ten incidents involving this crib.

The cribs, manufactured by Stork Craft Manufacturing, Inc., contain metal support brackets that are used to support the crib mattresses. According to the press release, the mattress board can crack and break. If one or more of the support brackets break, the mattress can collapse and create a dangerous gap between the mattress and crib rails. This gap creates a suffocation and entrapment hazard for young children.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is aware of ten incidents where one or more mattress support brackets broke. In many of the reports, the support bracket broke, resulting in a collapse of the mattress and a creation of a gap between the mattress and crib rails. There was one report of a toddler who sustained bruises to his forehead. Another report mentioned a child who became entrapped in a gap between the mattress and the drop side rail, but was not injured.

Approximately 535,000 Stork Craft Baby cribs are included in the recall. The cribs were manufactured and distributed between May 2000 and November 2008. The cribs came in various styles and finishes. According to the press release, the manufacture date, model number, country of origin, crib name and the firm’s information can be found on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board.

The cribs were sold by major retailers, including J.C. Penney, Kmart and Wal-Mart, as well as online through Amazon.com, Babiesrus.com, Costco.com, Sears.com and Walmart.com from May 2000 through January 2009 for between $100 and $400.
