The summer months in Massachusetts bring an onslaught of motorcycle crashes across the state. In Brockton, there have already been five serious motorcycle accidents, including two fatalities. Many of these motorcycle accidents are the result of other motorists not seeing motorcycles.
More motorcyclists are on Massachusetts roads, now that the stormy weather has subsided. Bikers have been seen in greater numbers on the roads as the weather has finally turned sunny.
“I think people aren’t cautious. They’re not programmed to see motorcycles. Their head is programmed to see cars,” said Raynham Police Chief Louis Pacheco.
Pacheco has worked at reconstructing dozens of motorcycle accidents and said that almost all of the motorists told police that they did not see the motorcycle.
Lawmakers are reviewing numerous proposed measures that would make motorcycle riding safer, which include stricter penalties for right-of-way violations and more allocations to a motorcycle safety fund.
In 2008, the Registry of Motor Vehicles reported 42 motorcycle fatalities. The Registry also reported that there were 32,856 motorcycle permits issued that year, which is up 8 percent from 2007.
