Teen Drowning in Long Pond
In a tragic twist of fate, a 15-year-old teen lost his life in a drowning accident in Long Pond in Tyngsborough last Wednesday.
The victim, Ide Eboigbe, had just finished his last day of ninth grade at the Innovation Academy Charter School when he drowned. According to the officials, he was on a boat ride with a group of students from the private charter school.
Eboigbe, who was not wearing a life jacket, swam from the boat, the Boston Channel reported, and started drowning. Even though people swam out to help him, he was beyond reach underwater.
Emergency crews were summoned, along with dive teams. Rescuers pulled Eboigbe out of the water, but it was too late. He was pronounced dead at the hospital (Lowell General Hospital).
This tragic drowning accident is a sad reminder of the importance of life jackets. Massachusetts boating law does not require children over 12 years old to wear life jackets, so Eboigbe wasn’t breaking any laws for not wearing one. Though, sometimes life is unpredictable, and even though Ide Eboigbe was known as a great athlete and was a member of the school’s basketball and track teams, the water still overcame him. Perhaps this young person’s tragic loss of life can inspire others to be more careful in the water and remind them to put on life jackets, even when they are in a boat.
We offer our sincerest condolences to young Ide Eboigbe’s family in their loss.
