Three Men Indicted in Boy’s Uzi Death at Gun Fair

Posted on Dec 19, 2008

Three men, including a police chief, have been indicted on involuntary manslaughter counts in the gun-fair death of an 8-year-old boy.  The boy had accidentally shot himself in the head with an Uzi that a prosecutor said he should not have been allowed to handle.

The gun club where the event was held, also was charged in the boy’s death.  District Attorney William Bennett said that despite the fair’s advertisement that shooters would have certified instructors, the boy, Christopher Bizilj from Ashford, Connecticut, was supervised by an uncertified 15-year-old boy.

Bizilj lost control of the 9 mm micro submachine gun as it recoiled while he was shooting at a pumpkin on October 26, 2008 at the Machine Gun Shoot and Firearms Expo at the Westfield Sportsman’s Club in western Massachusetts.

The two men who brought the automatic gun to the show, Carl Guiffre of Hartford, Connecticut and Domenico Spano of New Milford, Connecticut, were indicted in connection to the boy’s death.  Pelham Police Chief Edward Fleury was also charged due to the fact that he owns the sponsor of the gun fair, COP Firearms & Training.

The boy's father, Dr. Charles Bizilj, was not indicted.  He had taken his son to the gun show and at the time of the accident, he was standing with a camera 10 feet behind his son as he fired the weapon. Dr. Charles Bizilj is an emergency room physician from Ashford, Connecticut.  Prosecution did not pursue his indictment and Bennett was quoted as saying the father "will be punished every day of the rest of his life."

Fluery has been police chief in the small town, Pelham for 20 years. He went on a sick leave immediately following the fatal shooting accident.  Fluery was well known in Pelham for his personal zeal for gun safety.
