Toyota Camry Acceleration Issues Caused 8 Deaths in 2003-2004
February 18, 2010 – Rehoboth – Eight deaths that occurred more than 5 years ago appear to be related to the current recalled Toyota vehicles.
According to Safety Research & Strategies, Inc., the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) current investigations into the unexpected acceleration issue found in many Toyota cars are warranted, but may have come too late for some victims of Toyota-related crashes.
New evidence shows that at least 8 Toyota Camry owners died in crashes related to unexpected acceleration between 2003 and 2004. At the time, claims that Toyota’s cars had a tendency to accelerate when the brakes were applied were mostly ignored, with Toyota insisting that the throttle and brakes worked perfectly.
One example is that of Juanita Grossman, who was killed in 2004 when her Toyota Camry suddenly accelerated in a parking lot, sending her into another car and a building. Her feet were firmly pressed on the brake pedal at the time of the car accident, but to no avail.
It has now become obvious that the gas pedal, floor mats, or both, are responsible for serious car accidents that resulted in severe personal injuries and even death. So far, NHTSA has reported that at least 34 deaths can be attributed to recalled Toyotas.
While it’s laudable that the auto manufacturer and the NHTSA are now taking the unexpected acceleration issues seriously, it remains too late for the victims of these crashes.
