Toyota's President Apologizes But Does Not Recall Prius Hybrids

February 5, 2010 – Washington - Toyota’s chief apologized publicly on Friday for the mass product recall currently in effect on millions of vehicles, but to the surprise of many, did not initiate a Prius recall.

According to the Los Angeles Times, industry insiders expected Toyota president Akio Toyoda to issue a product recall on the Prius hybrid for its problems with unexpected acceleration. Instead, Toyoda claimed that a decision had not yet been made regarding the potential product recall.

The number of Prius hybrids to be recalled would be about 270,000, adding to the 9 million vehicles already included in the mass car recall. Toyota’s troubles will only increase if Priuses are in fact recalled, which could be why the company’s president is hesitant to make that decision.

Some news stations had called for a public apology to consumers, which Toyoda provided in English. He rarely appears publicly, but officials say that Toyoda apparently decided that the situation is grave enough to warrant such an appearance.

Toyoda also announced that he would lead a special committee that would pay particular attention to quality control, investigating the factors that led to the mass product recall and ensuring that the product design and production are up to par. It was also decided that Toyota would create departments in certain regions to pay special attention to quality control.
