February 4, 2010 - Raynham, Mass. - At least 17 people have suffered personal injuries when their Prius continued to accelerate after they applied pressure to the vehicle's brakes, leading to a mass Toyota safety recall Tuesday.
A handful of Toyota owners and their families have filed personal injury lawsuits and wrongful death claims against the company because of spinal cord injuries-and even death-caused by safety concerns with the vehicles. In addition to the 17 reported personal injuries, USA Today said that recalled cars factored into 5 deaths and 13 car crashes.
According to WickedLocal.com, the Toyota recall affects about 2.3 million vehicles in which the gas pedals have the potential to stick after the driver takes pressure off it.
About 5 million additional Toyota vehicles were issued a separate mass safety recall because the floor mats have been known to become pinched between pedals, possibly resulting in unwanted acceleration.
The automaker's current solution is to advise consumers to take the recalled cars to a dealership for repairs. Dealers in Massachusetts and other states are making an effort to alert Toyota vehicle owners when the correct parts arrive so that they can begin working on the problem.
Despite Toyota's apparent effort to ship parts quickly to dealers, it cannot happen soon enough for those who have to drive their compromised vehicles on a daily basis. The solution also comes too late for those who have suffered personal injuries or death because of the manufacturer defect.
