Voluntary Cleviprex Drug Recall Expanded

March 18, 2010 – Washington, D.C. – The discovery of a metal substance in some vials of Cleviprex has created a need to expand the product recall of the popular hypertension drug.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Cleviprex is an emulsion that needs to be injected to treat patients with hypertension. The foreign matter found in some vials is made up mostly of stainless-steel particles, which could possibly decrease the blood flow in capillaries causing a host of serious health conditions. This could reduce the supply of blood to bodily tissues, affecting major organs, such as the brain, lungs, kidney, liver, or heart.

The recalled hypertension drug is manufactured by Medicines Co., which initially recalled 11 lots of the drug in December. The expanded recall affects 4 more lots.

The Cleviprex recall has not yet caused illness or injury in any consumers and representatives of the companies say the size of the particles found in some vials is too small to affect the human body. However, if the particles were to clump together, it could present a serious health hazard.
