West Brookfield Family of 5 Treated After Carbon Monoxide Exposure
March 4, 2010 – West Brookfield, Mass. – A family of 5 was removed from their West Brookfield home and taken to the hospital after suffering carbon monoxide poisoning.
According to MassLive, the gas poisoning victims called emergency crews when they all began feeling sick while in the home. The victims include a young child and an elderly woman, who is the homeowner. The 5 victims were transported to Baystate Mary Lane Hospital after firefighters arrived at the house at about noon on Wednesday.
The source of the gas is still unknown, but firefighters said they were able to detect high levels. The utility companies that supply propane and oil for the home were called to the scene.
The current condition of the West Brookfield residents is unknown, and authorities continue to investigate the issue and what could have caused the dangerous carbon monoxide poisoning.
Carbon monoxide is a clear, odorless gas, which makes it difficult to detect before it has an affect on victims. It is created when gasoline, oil, propane, or wood is burned, though the source in this case is unclear. Carbon monoxide poisoning can be lethal in some cases, and can also be the cause for dangerous explosions.
