A 4-year-old girl was hit by a car as she crossed the street with her grandfather. According to the Norfolk District Attorney’s spokesman, the girl is in critical condition.
The tragic pedestrian accident occurred in Stoughton when an elderly driver hit the young girl in the crosswalk. Authorities have said that an 88-year-old woman from Canton was driving the Toyota Camry that struck the girl. The girl was medflighted to Tufts Medical Center in Boston.
The elderly driver was taken to Milton Hospital for treatment for shortness of breath. She has been cooperating with police at this point and has not been charged.
An off-duty fire lieutenant ran to the accident scene. He said there was a nurse on the scene who was doing a great job and had started administering CPR. Initially the girl did not have a pulse, but after about a minute or two of CPR, the girl had a pulse.
This accident is the fourth one in about two weeks involving an elderly driver in Massachusetts.
A bill has been proposed by Sen. Brian Joyce that would require drivers 85 and older to be re-tested.
